Electric Stage
Josh Davis Band – http://www.myspace.com/thejoshdavisband
Releasing their sophomore album, Bluebird earlier this year, Des Moines’ Josh Davis Band draws the crowds to their roots-rock, alt-country style and always delivers an impressive performance.

Floodplane – http://www.myspace.com/floodplane
Drawing comparisons to The Allman Brothers, Phish, and the Grateful Dead, Floodplane has been playing their eclectic jam music in Des Moines for more than ten years. The four-piece has shared the stage with Ziggy Marley, Umphrey’s McGee, and Robert Walters.

Brother Trucker – http://www.myspace.com/brothertrucker
The Des Moines-based quartet can pull off shakin’ rock and country-laced ballads in effortless form. Top that off with heartfelt lyrics by singer, songwriter Andy Fleming and you have a perfect fit for Little BIG Fest.

Jim the Mule – http://www.myspace.com/jimthemulerockandroll
Hailing from the Quad Cities, Jim the Mule describes their sound as a blend of gritty rock and roll with textures of the late ‘60s and early ‘70s and touches of southern rock, pop, alternative rock and country — forging their genre “Midwestern Rock and Roll.”

Obsidian’s Dream – http://www.myspace.com/obsidiansdream
Obsidian’s Dream’s first performance was at a friend’s Halloween party in 2003, now the band has played alongside bands like Widespread Panic and Ben Harper at the Wakarusa Music Festival in Kansas this summer.

Mooseknuckle – http://www.myspace.com/mooseknuckleknucks
The side project of Floodplane’s Gwen Page, Mooseknuckle will bring their high-energy fusion of funk, jazz, and rock to Little BIG Fest, just two months after the Des Moines-based four-piece celebrated their one-year anniversary.

Authentic Acoustic Stage
Tyler Thompson Band –
http://www.myspace.com/tylerthompsonband
In 1998, the Tyler Thompson Band recorded their first album with great musicians such as Chuck Leavell (Allman Brothers, Eric Clapton), Leroy Parnell, and Mick Thomson. After touring the U.S. and Europe and a two-year hiatus, the group is back with a new album and continue to produce great rock music.

Mr. Baber’s Neighbors – http://www.myspace.com/mrbabersneighborsthesolarstringband
This Des Moines four-piece takes bluegrass to the next level with touches of country, folk and roots-rock added to the mix.

Dick Prall – http://www.myspace.com/dickprall
Born in Iowa but based in Chicago, singer, songwriter Dick Prall is a true troubadour. Prall effortlessly blends his unique, reassuring vocals with smooth melodies on his most recent album Weightless.

Andy Fleming – http://www.myspace.com/brothertrucker
Brother Trucker’s front-man singer, songwriter, guitarist takes it solo.

Jon Peter Lewis – http://www.myspace.com/jonpeterlewis
Best known for being a Top 10 finalist from American Idol’s third season. Jon Peter Lewis is now signed to Des Moines’ Authentic Records and is currently promoting his new album Stories From Hollywood.

To Be Loved

It only happens a few times a year...  You unwrap the CD and pop it into the player with jaded hope.  Will what comes out of the speakers sound distinguishable from something that landed in your hands last week, last month, last year?  And then that first track hits your ears...something NEW, something FRESH!  Something BRILLIANT!

Ian Moore's new album, To Be Loved, wins my vote for most appropriate title of the year.  From the pop hook of "30 Days" to the dynamic shifts of "To Be Loved", Ian Moore is a revelation, sharing his gift for fresh melodies and soulful vocals.  A wonderful album from a hell of a songwriter.

In stores today, on Justice Records.

The July 15th Deadline

With the deadline upon Internet radio to pay the new royalty rate, Congress weighed in at the last minute and pressured SoundExchange to give webcasters more time to negotiate. SoundExchange promised Congress that it would not initiate enforcement actions on July 15th provided that webcasters continued good faith negotiations. Thanks to all DMPulse listeners that contacted Congress!  We couldn't have done it without you.  There's more to be done, and we'll keep you posted on the progress.  If you haven't already, PLEASE contact your representatives and encourage him or her to co-sponsor The Internet Radio Equality Act.

Day of Silence

DMPulse is silent today to draw attention to an impending royalty rate increase that, if implemented, would lead to the virtual shutdown of this country's Internet radio industry.

"Silence" is what Internet radio may be reduced to after July 15th, the day on which 17 months' worth of retroactive royalty payments -- at new, exceedingly high rates -- are due to the SoundExchange collection organization, following a recent Copyright Royalty Board (CRB) decision.

Listeners are urged to take action TODAY by calling their representatives in Washington D.C. and urging them to help our industry by supporting the Internet Radio Equality Act.

To take action:  start here at SaveNetRadio.org

More about the Day of Silence and the CRB ruling at the Radio and Internet Newsletter.

Aug. 09, 2007

Tuesday, June 26 is the Day of Silence at DMPulse

The future of Internet radio is in immediate danger. Royalty rates for webcasters have been drastically increased by a recent ruling and are due to go into effect on July 15 (retroactive to Jan 1, 2006!).

To protest these rates and encourage you to take action and contact your Congressional representatives, we are taking part in the Day of Silence, by silencing our programming for today.

We ask that you excuse the interruption of our normal programming, and ask that you take action to help ensure this silence is not permanent. Please call your Congressional Representatives today. Click the link below http://www3.capwiz.com/saveinternetradio/issues/alert/?alertid=9738601
for instructions how.

Thank you!

Act Now!

The future of Internet radio is in immediate danger.  Royalty rates for webcasters have been drastically increased by a recent ruling and are due to go into effect on May 15 (retroactive to Jan 1, 2006!). If the increased rates remain unchanged, the majority of webcasters will go bankrupt and silent on this date.  Internet radio needs your help! H.R. 2060, The Internet Radio Equality Act was introduced by Representatives Jay Inslee (D-WA) and Donald Manzullo (R-IL ) to save the Internet radio industry. Please call your congressperson to ask them to co-sponsor H.R. 2060.

**As much as I'd like to keep supporting the local music scene, DMPulse will no longer exist unless more reasonable royalty rates are implemented.  Do not let poor legislation impact the huge array of music available online, and the millions of dollars artists have received in royalty payments.

If You Feel Like Dancing...

Things are what you make of them.  Indeed.

Tonight's Bishop Allen show was a great example of what can happen when a band willing to play their hearts out just days before SXSW meets a crowd ready to soak up every minute.  It's quite refreshing to witness a band say, "we've been talking about Des Moines in the van."  And not in a bad way.  Hats off to the band for making another stop in DSM, and a tip o' the cap to the dancing, singing and rollicking crowd at the Mews tonight.  It appears we made a good impression last time they were in town.  I think we'll be seeing Bishop Allen again.

Favorite Albums of 2006

Recently, The Des Moines Register asked me to contribute my favorite albums of 2006.  The article is here.

Below is the full list.  They aren't necessarily the best albums released in 2006, but they are my favorites!

1.  The Decemberists – “The Crane Wife”

I was drawn to great storytelling this year and vocalist Colin Meloy has lyrical gems on this one.  Forbidden love that leads to a tragic murder?  Check.  An expectant mother losing her lover in the Battle of Bull Run?  Check.  You don’t hear this sort of thing on Mr. Timberlake’s new album, do you?

2.  The Hold Steady – “Boys and Girls In America

"Boys and Girls in America have such a sad time together..." Jack Kerouac, "On the Road"

Pretty ballsy to quote Kerouac in the opening line of an album, but The Hold Steady can deliver the goods.  Listen to "Stuck Between Stations"...you hear that?  Makes you think of "Born to Run," doesn't it?  Vocalist/guitarist Craig Finn channels Bruce Springsteen, and that's a good thing.  Finn moved away from Minneapolis in 2000, but he still hasn't left, as his narratives really speak to those of us who grew up in the Midwest.

3.  Band of Horses – “Everything All The Time”

“The Funeral" is my favorite song of the year, and "The Great Salt Lake" and "Monsters" sound like a band searching for something.  Optimism and despair are dance partners.  Why so bi-polar, B.O.H.?  I just hope they channel that optimism into recording a follow-up, pronto.

4.  Midlake – “The Trials of Van Occupanther”

Now here is one I did not expect to like.  Who’s Van Occupanther?  What’s with the guy in the bear mask on the cover?  My questions were answered with two words: vocal harmonies.  I hear Crosby, Stills & Nash are jealous.  This album certainly isn’t one to throw on the iPod and go pump iron to, but it makes for quite a pleasant listen in my book.

5. The Envy Corps – “I Will Write You Love Letters If You Tell Me To”

“Rhinemaidens” just motors along like a pleasant summer road trip.  That part of “Story Problem” where the band brings in friends to sing along?  Best musical moment of the year for me!  “If we’re such good friends, why don’t we act like it?”  My CD player thinks this album is that friend that just won’t go away.

Honorable Mention:

Regina Spektor “Begin to Hope”; Neko Case “Fox Confessor Brings The Flood”; Silversun Pickups “Carnavas”; Gnarls Barkley “St. Elsewhere”; Mates of State “Bring It Back”...did I just sneak these five in and make this a top 10 list?  Excellent!

Local Love

Thanks to the local bands who have added a blurb about DMPulse.com in their e-newsletters!  Great music is all around here in Central Iowa, and it's time a local radio station truly supports local music.  Thanks for the kind words and enthusiasm towards what we are trying to do here.

BTW, what are we trying to do?  Support local bands, venues and the artists coming to play in the area!  Get out there and support live music!
